Beware the Ice!

New Year greetings to all!

It's cold out there at the moment folks and ice is lurking! Be careful! I suggest the turbo trainer might be the best option, but where's the fun in that!? A couple of friends of mine were brought to a complete halt recently whilst climbing a steep hill - they were ambushed by sheet ice and forced, with some hilarity, to crawl on their hands and knees to the side of the road! If only I'd been there to see it! But, seriously fellow bikers, these are dangerous times on little used country roads, particularly on higher ground. Do take care! And if in doubt, give it a miss - they'll be plenty of time for putting the miles in and mashing those pedals soon enough.

Winter training tip: Do some work on your core strength - http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/abdominalcorestrength1/a/NewCore.htm

I'll leave you with some words from the sadly, long departed Mr Bruce Lee:

“If you always put a limit on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.”

Yours

Pale Rider - I have some studded tyres in the garage, would you recommend these for winter rides ?

Or should these be left to the likes of James Caan in the poular 70's film - Rollerball.

Also what do you recommend for nettle stings ?

Dear Rigsby,

I think you would struggle to fit those studded beasts to your pushbike. As suggested, best leave that sort of thing to Mr Caan and others of his ilk.

As for nettle stings, if your question is genuine, I really don't think serious cycling is for you. It is well known that many professional cyclists fill their shorts with fistfulls of nettles prior to racing in order to increase levels of aggression. If you would shrink from the same, perhaps you should take up croquet instead. Let's hope not.

Here in the 'States, I have heard of riders stinging themselves with Hornets before a race to get PUMPED.

One guy passed away, as he had stung himself over a dozen times and suffered an allergic reaction.

This type of cycling is madness !

All the best,

Col Jackson

Obviously Col Jackson is only joking there people, as indeed was I! The only things anyone should be doing to go faster on a bike are training well, eating sensibly and racing hard.

I'm siging off for a while now. The road is long and I have many miles to cycle. But I shall return....

For nettle stings I would recommend dock leaves, In winter these can be hard to come by so I've long been in the practice of keeping a supply in the freezer. Take em with you in pocket and they thaw out within a couple of miles of starting the ride.
